BitchBoys: ...in Heat
Everybody
knows where Slovenia is, right? Very simple; go to Austria and head south. The
Bitch Boys hail from there. Like the old Ike & Tina Turner Review, the Bitch
Boys never, ever do anything nice and easy. In Heat is full of surf-style instrumentals
played with gritty, leathery hands and, accordingly, a good amount of sneering
attitude. “Quirky” is another adjective that suits them fine.
Given that brief description of what this band does, their cover of the Stones’
“Paint it Black,” including an interlude of the theme from “Love Story,” fits
right in. “Gargemel Slaci Tangice” rocks out between sections of surf-style
borrowings from “The Nutcracker Suite.” Raised or crinkled your eyebrows yet?
Hey, it works, it’s fun and it is indicative of the Bitch Boys’ habit of changing
tempos during songs, which is one of those musicians’ tricks that almost always
wins me over.
“My Bunny” is a change of pace on account of it being a very pretty slow-dance
number without drastic tempo changes. Further showcasing the band’s diversity
is “Skawboy,” a rollercoaster of a tune with several trips from slow tempo to
fast and back again. “Suez Canal Affair” is sinister and casually paced spy
surf with a dramatic musical chase scene in the middle of it.
If you live in Slovenia, I hope you’ve seen this band play live. If you don’t
live there and can’t get there in the foreseeable future, pull up a beach blanket
and a cold drink, learn more about the band and hear some samples at www.guitar9.com/inheat.html
