Beyond the Sea (Cordelia Records CD040)

Fine
album essentially internet sold but so impressed were we, that we grabbed
a few copies for NGD readers. As Cordelia say on the (sparse) liner notes,
The Ventures covered and improved a lot of chart pop songs and makes the
point that today's chart music could do with the same. So the label has
gone out and done it! A value for money twenty six modern rock instrumental
bands, many of which you'll be familiar with and from all over the globe,
give their modern slant on familiar pop tunes and it works! Bands such
as The Thurston Lava Tube from the UK, Europe's Bitch Boys, Brazil's Estrumental,
the USA's Urban Surf Kings and The Pyronauts do a grand job of covering
and drastically improving a lot of otherwise mundane pop and breath a
new life into tracks like My Favourite Things (so did Julie Andrews surf?;
Then He Kissed Me (crystal clear with pun intended); Je T'Aime Moi (guitar
version indeed); Barbie Girl (oh yes!); REM's The One I Love (good job
done) and so many more. Like we said 26 cuts (for a tenner by the way).
Cordelia do us proud on what must be their best release so far. |
